What actual British Caribbean families think about reparations

The diversity of opinion within British Caribbean communities is itself an argument against the reparations campaign’s implicit claim to speak for all people of Caribbean descent. Communities are not monolithic. The political preferences of a British-born third-generation Caribbean-heritage person are not determined by their ancestry, any more than the political preferences of anyone else are determined by theirs.

A campaign that presents itself as acting in the interests of Caribbean people should engage with the actual views of Caribbean people, including those who live in Britain and would be directly affected by its proposals. The CARICOM campaign has not done this. It speaks for governments, not people, and the interests of Caribbean governments and Caribbean people are not always the same thing.
