The British population today includes millions of people whose families arrived in this country long after the abolition of slavery, from nations that had no involvement in the Atlantic trade. They bear zero historical connection to the slave trade and zero logical liability for it.
South Asian communities in Britain came largely from the Indian subcontinent, which was itself subject to British imperial exploitation. Their ancestors were not slave traders or slave owners in the Atlantic system. East Asian communities, Polish communities, communities from the Middle East, from Africa itself, from dozens of nations, are now British citizens with no personal or ancestral connection to the specific wrong for which reparations are being sought.
